- Introduction of each participant
- Presentation of each musician’s instrument
- Discussion on previous use and experience with VR
- Discussion of expectations for the overall project
- VR introduction for all participants led by Christian Cherene
- Decisions to make: What type of music, what type of technologies to use, use Sonic Lab’s unique spaces to our advantage, designing of Audience experience- stationary or mobile? What will be the format of Final Piece: documentary/live//mixed…?
Workshop #2
23 and 24 May 2018 – Sonic Lab and Broadcast Lab, Sonic Arts Research Centre
- Music making with all musicians, Marie-Louise using her ‘soundbeam’ instrument
- Discussion and Development of Improvisation frameworks and musical ideas
- Experimentation with physical space (players positioned below the grid and above the Sonic Lab)
- Experimentation with different ‘musical moods’, set by James (clarinet)
- Testing of available VR tools (including EXA: The infinite VR instrument – Drum Kit)
- Extend, Adapt and Augment EXA: The infinite VR instrument for use by Marie-Louise
- Recording of individual instruments and sounds (led by Craig Jackson)
- Rehearsing of 5 musical idea pieces based on morning improvisations and discussions
- Development of graphic representations of 5 musical ideas
- Drake’s Wired Ensemble to develop loops based on instrument recordings (Damian)
- Development of gestural interaction with clarinet using Vive tracking sensor (in progress with Christian Cherene)
Workshop #3
3, 4, 5, and 6 September 2018 – Surround Studio 2, and Sonic Lab, Sonic Arts Research Centre
- Further extend, adapt and augment EXA: The infinite VR instrument for use by Marie-Louise

Practice with the new virtual instrument in a surround sound environment: first using an 8 loudspeaker array, and then, for a fully immersive experience, using the 48 loudspeakers of the Sonic Lab space.

- Gestural control for ambisonic paning and granularisation
- Clarinet augmentation
- Position tracking for ambisonic diffusion
